I use a simple heuristic: would I feel ashamed showing the current state of the product to a new member of the team? Would he understand what has been done?

If it takes you more time to figure out how to hack the system to include a feature or to fix what's not working, then it's time to take a step back and clean things up a bit.

While it's easy to think you need "that special feature that will make all the difference", customers rarely care that much, but loathe to use stuff that works badly, or inconsistently.

Speed, polish and simplicity always trump full-featuredness.

I totally agree. I have right now the Nexus S and I am not happy with it. Here are three more points:

The GPS localization is really bad. It is a mess. Sometimes I have to wait 2 or 3 min. to get a signal. Before the Nexus S I used a iPhone 3. The GPS in the iPhone was much better/faster. Even inside of buildings I got a GPS signal with the iPhone.

Since I synced my Adressbook with Outlook & Google I have every contact twice times! If I am delete one both are deleted.

The image gallary sometimes shows the images not in chronological order. Sometimes the images are just randomly mixed together. I assumed that the google Ingineers are able to implement a simple "sort by date". This should not be a big deal.

Next time than I am again in Germany I will by a simlock free iPhone.

The registry hack worked great for me as far as I can tell. I have been dealing with this in One note for a long time. Every other method seems to disable inking which defeats the purpose of having a tablet in the first place. I would like the pen button combined with TAP to still work as the right click though. What happens now is the second pen button IS the right click. IOW I don't get the option to TAP with the button engaged. Do you know a hack to make this work as it's supposed to? System is a laptop with built in wacom tablet (3"x5") windows XP Pro latest SP. If it were tablet edition I'd know what to do. The tablet control panel is missing the usual options (I also own a 12" tablet computer so I'm accustomed to the normal tablet options). Please contact me if you know the cure.
pro audio guy at yahoo dot com You know what to do.....

It is easy to see that they do not know anything about relational databases but they do now a lot about flat-file systems such as XML and the like. Since uniquely identifying a row in a relation or table is at the core of the relational data model a database expert never would've made such a mistake.

Jeff Atwood (Coding Horror) wrote a really interesting article on "technical debt" a while back. (I won't spam you with a link). His premise was it's inevitable, but just as inevitable, if you don't pay it (i.e., maintain your code), it's all going pear shaped.

Very true. But have you heard about the Pareto principle. How do you know when something is 80% or good enough? I feel the most difficult part is not "getting stuck" in optimising things that you feel matters, but maybe in the grand scheme of things doesn't really really matter..

I'd love to hear your thoughts about this.
